I Tested 7 "Built-In Bra" Tanks Over 30 Days. One of Them Changed Everything.
Seven tanks, thirty days, the same hot washing-machine cycle every Sunday, the same old test questions my mother used to ask about hers. Here's what I found — and the single one I'm still wearing today.
The Pad in a Pocket Will Fold On You in Week Two

Three of the seven tanks had the classic shelf-bra setup: a strip of elastic across the chest and a loose foam cup slid into a pocket. All three had a folded, warped pad by the end of the second week. One of them had a pad that migrated so far it was sitting under my armpit by Thursday.
Elastic "Shelf Bra" Lifting Does Nothing on a 60+ Chest

The "it has a built-in bra" marketing covers a huge range. Two of the seven tanks were basically a camisole with a tighter rib band. There was no lift at all. On the kind of chest a lot of us have after 55 or 60, "elastic across the ribs" is not support, it's just discomfort in a different place.
The Only One That Actually Held: Shaped Cups Stitched Permanently Into the Lining

One of the seven was built differently. When I turned it inside out, the cups were part of the garment — shaped, properly stitched into the lining all the way round, not a pocket for a pad. On the first wear I noticed something I hadn't felt in years: lift without compression. Nothing pressing on my ribs, nothing digging at the shoulders.
Thirty washes later the cups still come out the same shape. That's the Freeform Tank, and that's the one I'm still in.
Strap Width Below 1.5 Inches Will Dig a Groove By Lunch

I measured all seven. The two tanks with sub-inch spaghetti straps gave me a visible red line across the shoulder by the end of my first day. The three mid-width tanks (around 1¼ inches) were okay for a few hours but slipped off a sloping shoulder. The Freeform's straps are two inches wide and perfectly flat. They stayed on and I had no groove at the end of the day.
The Winner Still Looks Right 30 Washes Later

The final test was simple: does it still look like a nice top? Not warped, not bagged out, not fuzz-balled from the dryer. Of the seven, two had pilled, three had stretched out at the neckline, one had a pad falling out of its pocket. One — the Freeform — was indistinguishable from the day I unboxed it.
I'm not planning to open the other six again.
Test Winner: The Freeform Tank
- Only tank with cups stitched in — held shape at 30 washes
- Only tank with 2" flat straps — no red groove, no slip
- No band, no wire, no clasp — same support, zero compression
- Six shades, S to 3XL — I bought the three-pack after the test
