Four Bra Fittings Gave Pat Four Different Bra Sizes

In one year I was measured four times. A department store said 36C. A lingerie shop said 38B. A bra specialist said 34DD. An online quiz said 36D. I own a bra in every one of those sizes, and not one of them fits the way it did in the fitting room.
When I typed all four into the finder above, every one came back Large. I wear a size 14 blouse, which is also Large. I ordered the Large. It fits. That was the first piece of underwear I have bought online in six years that I did not send back.

Why Your Bra Size Keeps Changing: the Band Number Is Measured Differently by Every Brand
The number in a bra size is meant to be the measurement round your ribcage, just under the bust. Some brands use that measurement as it is. Others add four or five inches to it first. So a woman with a 33-inch ribcage is a 34 at one store and a 38 at the next, on the same day.
The letter is not a size on its own. It is the difference between your bust and that band number, one inch per letter. Change the band and the letter changes with it. A 34DD, a 36D and a 38C hold the same cup, which is why one fitter calls you a D and the next calls you a C.
Then there is the elastic. Every brand cuts its band to a different tightness, and every band loosens a little with each wash, so fitters size you down to make a new bra feel tight enough. The tag ends up describing the elastic, not you.

That is why you have a drawer full of bras in four sizes and a stack of return labels. It was never your body changing week to week. It was the band.
The Freeform Tank Has No Band, So Only Your Bust and Top Size Matter
- 1
No band means no band number
Nothing goes round your ribcage, so the number that changes from brand to brand is not on this tank at all. There is nothing to measure tight or loose.
- 2
The cups are sewn in and sized with the body
Shaped cups are stitched into the lining and grow with each size, S through 3XL, the same way a T-shirt's chest does. They cannot shift or fold in the wash.
- 3
Two-inch straps with nothing to adjust
The straps are as wide as three fingers and fixed in place. No sliders to set, no hooks to pick a row on.
- 4
Stretch body, cut straight
The fabric stretches four ways and the body is cut straight through the waist, so a size covers a real range of women, not one exact measurement.
