Most Built-In-Bra Tanks Hide a Loose Foam Pad in a Pocket. Turn One Inside Out and You'll See It in Ten Seconds.

I sent four of these tanks back before I learned how to check one. Here are the four checks, with photographs, so you can run them on the tank in your drawer right now.

Four return mailers with thin camisoles on a kitchen table

That is my kitchen table last spring. Four built-in-bra tanks, four return bags. Every one came from an ad that promised a tank that "replaces your bra". Every one sagged by lunchtime, and two of them came out of the washer with the cups folded in half.

I assumed it was me. My shape, my age, my size. It was not. It was what was inside the tanks, and you cannot see it from the outside. You can see it in ten seconds once you know where to look.

Start here

Two Bra Tanks That Look Identical in the Ad Photo

Two beige tanks laid flat side by side 1 2
  • 1A tank I returned. Same beige, same length, same "built-in bra" promise.
  • 2The one I kept. In a small ad photo on a phone, you would struggle to tell them apart.

Both are sold as a bra and a top in one. The difference is all on the inside, so that is where we start.

Check 0 · Turn it inside out

Inside Most Bra Tanks: a Loose Foam Pad Sitting in a Slit Pocket

Inside a cheap camisole: a loose foam pad sliding out of a pocket The copy 1 2
Inside the Freeform tank: cups stitched into the lining The Freeform 3 4
  • 1A slit in the lining. That is the "built-in bra": a pocket.
  • 2The foam pad. Nothing holds it. It came out in my hand.
  • 3A line of stitching runs all the way round each cup. The cup is sewn into the lining.
  • 4No opening anywhere. There is nothing to slide, fold or fall out.
How to do itTurn the tank inside out and run a finger round the inside of each cup. If your finger finds an opening, you have a pocket with a loose pad.
Check 1 · The pinch

Pinch the Cup. A Loose Pad Slides and Buckles. A Sewn Cup Stays Put.

Pinching a cheap camisole: the foam pad buckles The copy 1
Pressing the Freeform cup: it keeps its shape The Freeform 2
  • 1One pinch and the pad slid sideways and creased. That crease is what you feel under a blouse by mid-morning.
  • 2Same pinch. The cup keeps its round shape and does not move, because it is stitched in place.
How to do itWith the tank right side out, pinch the middle of one cup between thumb and finger and wiggle. If the shape slides or folds, it is a loose pad.
What the washer does

Three Washes Crease a Loose Bra Pad for Good

Creased loose foam pads on top of a washing machine 1 2
  • 1The pads from two of my returns, after three ordinary washes. Every one is creased, and one has a hard fold across the middle that never came out.
  • 2The tank they came out of. A pad that is free inside a pocket gets turned and folded by the drum every wash.

You can push a pad back in. You cannot push the crease out. A cup sewn into the lining has no room to turn, so it comes out of the washer in the shape it went in.

Check 2 · The flat-lay

Two Bra Tanks Labelled L. The Copy Measured 2 Inches Narrower Across the Chest.

Two tanks laid flat with tape measures across the chest 1 2
  • 1The tank on the left is the copy, armpit to armpit. Both tags say L.
  • 2The Freeform, same tape, same tag. Roughly two inches wider across the chest.

Two inches across the front is four inches round your body. That is why women order their usual size, the copy arrives tight, and they decide they must have gone up a size. They have not.

How to do itLay your tank flat, smooth it out, and measure straight across from armpit seam to armpit seam. Compare it with the size chart it was sold against.
Check 3 · The hem

A Raw Hem Curls Up and Rides a Bra Tank Above Your Waistband

A raw cut edge curling up The copy 1
A finished double-stitched hem lying flat The Freeform 2
  • 1A raw cut edge. It rolls up on itself, and as it rolls the tank climbs. I spent whole afternoons tugging those down.
  • 2A finished hem: folded under and sewn with two rows of stitching. It lies flat and stays where you put it.
How to do itLook at the bottom edge. If you can see a fold and stitching, it is finished. If the fabric just stops, it is raw, and it will curl.
Check 4 · The strap ruler

A Shoelace-Thin Bra Strap Digs In. A Strap as Wide as Three Fingers Spreads the Weight.

A ruler across a thin strap and a wide strap 1 2
  • 1The copy's strap. Under a quarter of an inch wide, and all the weight of the front hangs from it.
  • 2The Freeform strap, flat and wide. The same weight is spread over far more of your shoulder, so it does not cut a groove.
How to do itLay three fingers flat across the strap. If the strap is narrower than your fingers, expect red marks by evening.

If Your Bra Tank Failed Any of These, That Wasn't Your Body.

It was a loose pad, a narrow cut, a raw hem or a thin strap. Every one of those is a sewing decision somebody made to save money. None of them is your size, your shape or your age.

The one that passed

The Only Bra Tank I Tested That Passed All Four Checks

The Freeform tank laid flat, light blue 1 2 3 4
  • 1Pinch: passed. Shaped cups sewn into the lining. Nothing slides, nothing folds in the wash.
  • 2Flat-lay: passed. Cut true to the size chart, S to 3XL. Order the size you normally wear.
  • 3Hem: passed. Finished and double-stitched, so it stays down at your waist.
  • 4Strap: passed. Flat straps as wide as three fingers, and a square neckline that sits straight across.

It is called the Freeform Tank. No band round the ribs, no wire, no hooks. You pull it on over your head and you are dressed.

That is me in the laundry room on a Tuesday, in the light blue one. It has been through the wash more times than I can count. The cups look the way they did the day it arrived.

Women Who Had the Copy First

Ellen R., 69, Ohio Verified buyer
"I had bought one of the cheap ones off an ad first. I turned it inside out after reading this and there was the pocket, with the pad half out. This one has no pocket at all. It has been washed every week since June and the cups are still round."
Patrice M., 61, Georgia Verified buyer
"My first tank said XL and measured like a large. I thought I had gained weight. I ordered this in my usual XL and it fits like an XL. That alone was worth it."
Diane K., 66, Minnesota Verified buyer
"The hem on my old one rolled up all day. This one stays at my waist and the straps do not leave a mark. I bought the five and gave my sister two."
